Why do you need a Will?
Why do so many people leave this important part of life unaddressed? It's easier than you might think to put your wishes into your Will and to control the fate of your estate!
Do you have a will? It is believed that approximately half to two-thirds of American adults do not. Some people don’t think they need a will because they are not setting up a trust, and some people just keep putting off what they think is a difficult task.
The truth is, writing a will can be very satisfying because you’re taking control of where your assets will go. You’re deciding how your assets will be distributed, which charities you want to donate to, and whom you want to act as your executor.
Every state has laws that determine who receives a person’s assets if clear instructions have not been left. (Read more about Georgia laws.)
A person who does not have a will or a living trust is effectively allowing the state to determine what will happen to his or her assets upon death. A surprising number of individuals fail to put a will or living trust into place. This can be a significant disappointment and source of pain for their families.
So, what should you do? Have a will prepared. The more carefully you have thought about what you want to do, the easier it is for your lawyer to put those thoughts into the right language. Think about ways that you can plan, now, to transfer assets to the people and charitable institutions of your choice. Without a will you are not only giving up your assets―you are giving up control over those assets.
